Worldwide sales of service provider routers accelerated in the third quarter with a 30 per cent increase over the same period last year, new market data has revealed. Research from Dell'Oro Group suggests that Cisco Systems was the clear market leader with more than 55 per cent revenue share. Rounding out the top four were Juniper Networks, Alcatel and Redback Networks. The report highlights a "notably strong demand" for edge routers, which grew at more than twice the rate of core routers and accounted for nearly two-thirds of the $1.5bn service provider router market. "Over the past three quarters, the edge router market growth has accelerated as service providers look to prepare their networks for next-generation broadband services such as IPTV and VoIP," said Shin Umeda, vice president of router research at Dell'Oro Group....

Configuring quality of service (QoS) can be very complex. To help make network administrators' lives easier, Cisco has developed AutoQoS, which configures QoS settings for you. In this edition of Cisco Routers and Switches, David Davis introduces you to AutoQoS, discusses its benefits, and tells you how to configure it. Configuring quality of service (QoS) can be very complex. The Cisco IOS features many different methods for QoSso many that there are entire books that cover the topic of QoS. To help make network administrators' lives easier, Cisco has developed AutoQoS, which configures QoS settings for you. The concept almost sounds too good to be true, but is it? Let's review AutoQoS to see how it really works. Review the basics Let's start off by reviewing the basics....

Up From The Dot-Com Ashes

As tech spending retrenched in the wake of the dot-com collapse in 2000 and former Internet stars turned to black holes, the industry paused for a breather. It proved to be a short one. Tech survivors scrambled to find the Next Big Thing, and soon, new buzzwords entered the tech lexicon: blade servers, utility computing, grid computing and virtualization. The one thing they all have in common: a need for fast, easy-to-use computer networks. The trend has fueled a resurgence of computer networking firms, which as a group have risen over the last six months to No. 2 from No. 94 in IBD's industry rankings (as of Nov. 10). Industry giants such as IBM (NYSE:IBM - News), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ - News), Dell (NASDAQ:DELL - News), EMC (NYSE:EMC - News) and others hope to solve what IBM calls a "crisis of complexity" -- a Tower of Babel in technology....

An MIT physicist sees future of tech: personal fabricators
Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 11:15:28 PM by Blog57 Team
Imagine a machine with the ability to manufacture anything. Now imagine that machine in your living room. What would you build first? Would you start a business? Would you ever buy anything retail again? According to MIT physicist Neil Gershenfeld, it's not too early to think about these questions, because that machine, which he calls a personal fabricator, is not so far off - or so far-fetched - as you might think. Gershenfeld is director of MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA), an interdisciplinary outfit studying the intersection between information theory and industrial design. He also teaches a course called How to Make (Almost) Anything. Five years ago the National Science Foundation awarded the CBA $14 million to build a manufacturing lab full of futuristic hardware. That includes a nanobeam writer that can etch microscopic patterns on metal, and a supersonic waterjet cutter that generates 60,000 pounds of water pressure, enough to shear through almost any material....
